Survival of the fittest. Day 6, Horror stories of cross country traveling with an infant that hates her car seat and other scary tales

Before we get to the gut wrenching conclusion of this incredible epic tale of survival (and yes since I’m writing this, we have in fact made it to Tennessee, so please get some sleep), I’m going to take this post to talk about two of the most horrific parts of this trip. These aren’t for … Continue reading Survival of the fittest. Day 6, Horror stories of cross country traveling with an infant that hates her car seat and other scary tales

Enjoying the Sound of Silence. Day 5, we drive like crazy out of Alba cookie (Albuquerque), teach our 4 year old to graffiti Cadillacs, and see how a Big Texan brews craft beer

Day 5: the sound of Silence. If you can believe it, everyone slept most of the afternoon. Seriously—well except for me. I drove. But I drove like a madman out of Albuquerque east through Texas foothills to the plains of Oklahoma. We’d hatched a plan: wear them out, put them in the car, drive until … Continue reading Enjoying the Sound of Silence. Let’s go see a big hole in the ground: Day 4, We stop in to see the meteor crater, deep thoughts by four year olds, wine spills that cause adults to have temper tantrums

So Day 4…started off with this odd tapping sound. Immediately I thought my 4 year old was tapping my head with her favorite dinosaur, but then realized she’d also be screaming if that were the case. Then hit me—is that rain? Now work with me here—it hasn’t rained in Monterey CA since May so I’m … Continue reading Let’s go see a big hole in the ground: Day 4, We stop in to see the meteor crater, deep thoughts by four year olds, wine spills that cause adults to have temper tantrums

“Not even beautiful.” Day 3, Checking out the Grand Canyon with a ticked off 4 year old, trekking some majestic trails in Flagstaff, and oh yes, finally a brewery!

“Not even beautiful” my four year old’s opening comments as we entered the parking lot to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. “I read a book about it,” she replied confidently. And that set the tone for the Grand Canyon. Day 3: Anybody want to guess whose toddler threw a temper tantrum on the edge of … Continue reading “Not even beautiful.” Day 3, Checking out the Grand Canyon with a ticked off 4 year old, trekking some majestic trails in Flagstaff, and oh yes, finally a brewery!

Cross Country Odyssey Rolls on. Day 2: beating the heat for a run, it’s all a war of attrition with a little time poolside, face to face with dinosaurs and a really really long car ride to Flagstaff.

Day 2: it’s a war of attrition. Let’s be honest here, when traveling with little ones the key is to tire then out so they sleep as long as possible while driving. Day 2 came pretty close to this as we played all morning and took off for Arizona mid-afternoon eventually getting in late, but … Continue reading Cross Country Odyssey Rolls on. Heading down a new path: The chronicles of our epic all American road trip. Day 1: we head inland in search of dinosaurs and a desert oasis

In a change of pace from my usual writings, I wanted to post a couple of shorter blog entries regarding our journey from California to Tennessee this September. As much as possible I've tried to keep true to the original intent of this blog: paths (trails), pilsners (beers), pedals (cycling), and pinots (wines). As you … Continue reading Heading down a new path: The chronicles of our epic all American road trip. Day 1: we head inland in search of dinosaurs and a desert oasis
